Instagram Location Tagging

Instagram Location Tagging

Instagram location tagging adds a place name to your post (for example, a city landmark or business). In Oktopost, use Add Location in the post editor when Instagram is the selected network.

Location tagging is different from Facebook audience targeting (who sees a post) and from LinkedIn target audiences. Instagram uses Meta’s Content Publishing API and requires a valid Facebook Page ID that represents a physical place.

How to add a location

  1. Create or edit a post and select Instagram as the network.
  2. Choose the Instagram Business profile you want to publish from.
  3. Under post settings, open Add Location.
  4. Type at least two characters to search, then select a location from the results.
  5. Schedule or publish the post as usual.

Oktopost searches Meta’s Page directory and only shows places that include latitude and longitude coordinates at the time of search.

Supported post formats

Post format Location tagging in Oktopost Meta API support
Single image post Supported Supported
Single video / Reel Supported Supported
Carousel (multiple images or videos) Available in editor Not supported — publish may fail if a location is set
Story Available in editor Not supported — location stickers are not available via the API

If a scheduled post fails with a location error, remove the location or switch to a supported post format and try again.

Location ID requirements (Meta)

When you publish, Oktopost sends the selected place’s Facebook Page ID to Instagram as location_id. Meta validates that ID at publish time. A location can fail even if it appeared in search when you created the post.

Meta requires all of the following:

  • The ID must be a Facebook Page ID for a place (a numeric ID, typically 15+ digits). It is not the same as Facebook audience targeting keys used for countries, cities, or regions (for example, keys from ad geo search such as 2430536 or prefixed IDs like c2490299).
  • The Page must have latitude and longitude location data in Meta’s systems.
  • The Page must still exist and be visible to the API when the post publishes — not deleted, merged, or restricted.
  • Your connected Facebook / Instagram credentials must have permission to publish to the selected Instagram Business account.

Common Meta error when validation fails:

The following Location ID is invalid, cannot be seen or doesn't exist: [ID]. Use Places Search API to generate a valid one.

If you see this error, select a different location from the search results or remove the location and republish.

Why a location can stop working

Locations can fail on posts that previously worked because Meta’s place catalog changes over time.

Cause What happens
Place removed or merged on Facebook The stored Page ID is no longer valid at publish time
Location coordinates removed from the Page The Page no longer qualifies as a taggable place
Similar place names Search may return a different Page over time; an old scheduled post keeps the previous ID
Scheduled posts Location is saved when you create the post; Meta validates the ID when the post publishes, not when you schedule it
Wrong ID type Using an audience-targeting geo key instead of a Page ID always fails

Example: A post scheduled with “Downtown Nashville” can fail days later if Meta invalidates that Page ID — even though the same location worked on an earlier post. Removing the location or choosing a different search result typically resolves the issue.

Troubleshooting

Publish fails with an invalid location ID

  1. Edit the post and remove the current location.
  2. Search again and pick a different result for the same place name, if available.
  3. If the post is a carousel or Story, remove the location entirely — Meta does not support location tagging for those formats via the API.
  4. Retry publishing.

No locations appear in search

  • Type at least two characters and wait for results to load.
  • Confirm a Facebook Page credential is connected in Oktopost (search uses your account’s Facebook connection).
  • Try alternate spellings or a more specific place name (for example, include the city or business name).
  • Some places do not have coordinates in Meta’s database and will never appear.

Location worked before but fails now

This usually means Meta changed or removed the underlying Page. Re-search and select a fresh result, or publish without a location.
