Using AI Assistant to Generate Posts in the Post Editor

Use the AI Assistant panel in the Post Editor to turn a short idea, or an article link, into three ready-to-edit post drafts. Open the panel, describe what you want to say (or paste a URL), review the angle tabs, and insert the draft that fits your campaign.

The AI Assistant panel generates new posts from an idea or article link. To rewrite text already in the Post Editor, inline selection rewrite, full-post rephrase, or Change tone, see How to Create and Publish a Post in Oktopost.

Open AI Assistant

  1. Open the Post Editor from the calendar, campaign, or New Post flow.
  2. In the toolbar, click AI Assistant to open the generation panel.

The panel is separate from the inline rewrite menu that appears when you select text in the Post Editor. Use the panel when you want Oktopost to draft a new post from scratch.

Generate from an idea

  1. In the idea field, describe what you want the post to cover: topic, audience, key points, or tone. You need at least 30 characters unless you also attach an article link.
  2. Click Generate.

Oktopost returns three drafts, each from a different angle:

Tab Angle
Story Narrative framing that connects the topic to a relatable scenario or customer journey
How-to Action-oriented guidance or steps the reader can follow
Data & Insight Evidence-led takeaways or facts from your idea or article

You can generate with an idea alone, with an article link only (see the next section), or with both combined.

Profile voice

When Oktopost can detect a writing style from the selected profile's recent posts, a chip appears next to the idea field: Using [Profile]'s voice. After generation, the chip reads Used [Profile]'s voice.

The chip is display-only. Hover it to see that drafts match the tone and writing style from that profile's posts. If no voice is detected, the chip is hidden and Oktopost uses a default B2B writing style.

Voice applies across all three angle tabs. The tabs differ by content angle, not by voice.

Add an article link

Attach a source URL when you want drafts grounded in a specific article or landing page. The link does not appear in the generated post.

  1. In the AI Assistant panel, click Add Article Link.
  2. In the modal, paste the URL and click Add Link.

Accepted formats include URLs with or without a protocol, for example https://example.com/article or example.com/article.

After you add a link:

  • A link chip appears in the panel with the site favicon and the full URL in a tooltip
  • Click Remove on the chip to detach the link before generating again

You can click Generate with only an article link and no idea text. Oktopost reads the page content and produces the three angle tabs from that source. For best results, add an idea that calls out the audience or angle you want emphasized.

If Oktopost cannot read the page, you see: We couldn't read that article. Try another link, or describe your idea instead. Confirm the URL is public, reachable, and correctly formatted, then try again.

If the page or idea includes account banned keywords, Oktopost warns you before or after generation. Adjust the idea or choose a different link if you need to continue.

Review draft tabs

  1. After generation completes, open the Story, How-to, and Data & Insight tabs to compare drafts.
  2. Read each version and choose the angle that fits your channel and campaign.

Each draft tab includes a sparkle control for quick edits inside the tab, rewrite, copy, or change tone, without leaving the panel.

If your account uses banned keywords, Oktopost applies those guardrails during generation. When a draft would include a banned term, the system regenerates automatically until the output complies.

Insert or regenerate

Insert a draft

  1. Select the tab you want to use.
  2. Click Insert.

If the Post Editor is empty, the draft fills it. If there is already text, the draft is added after the existing text. A toast confirms Added to post, and the AI Assistant panel resets so you can start a new generation.

Regenerate all ideas

  • Click Regenerate to replace all three angle tabs with fresh drafts using the same idea and link settings.

Start over

  • Click Start Over to clear the idea, link, and generated drafts. Oktopost asks you to confirm before clearing your work.

Hashtags in your idea

AI Assistant does not add hashtags automatically. Include hashtag instructions in your idea only when you want them in the draft.

When you request hashtags

  • Ask for hashtags explicitly, for example, "Include hashtags about product marketing."
  • Multi-word hashtags use PascalCase (for example, #SocialSelling, not #social selling).
  • If you do not specify a count, Oktopost applies network-appropriate defaults based on the profiles selected for the post:
Network Default hashtag count
LinkedIn 3
X 1

Other networks use their own defaults when you request hashtags without a count. To control the exact number, state it in the idea, for example, "Use two hashtags" or "No hashtags."

Credits

Each Generate and Regenerate action in the AI Assistant panel consumes Oktopost Credits. Inline rewrite actions in the Post Editor also use credits.

Track your balance under Settings → AI Management → Credits. For plan details and usage history, see Managing Oktopost Credits.

Troubleshooting

Issue What to try
Article link cannot be read Confirm the URL is public and loads in a browser without sign-in. Retry with or without https://. Remove the chip and add the link again.
Invalid URL error Check for typos and unsupported formats. Use a standard web page URL rather than a file link or redirect chain.
Draft includes a banned keyword Oktopost should regenerate automatically. If the term still appears, adjust your idea or review banned keywords under account AI settings.
Hashtags missing or wrong Hashtags are added only when your idea requests them. Specify the topic, count, or "no hashtags" explicitly.
Unexpected credit usage Each full generation and regenerate uses credits. Use inline rewrite in the Post Editor for small edits to existing text.
